Does anyone pore fill wenge fret boards, or just sand the heck out of it? Thanks!

Sanding will just bring more pores Alex. It seems to me that one grain orientation or another showed less pores. I can't think of what you could pore fill a FB with other than playing with dirty hands and do lots of bending.

Recent experience working with wenge suggests to me that there could not be a less suitable material for fretboards.

Very open grained, deep pored, splintery and rough.

And it smells funny

Other than that, great tone wood

If you use it for a fretboard let us know how it turns out, it might be an interesting challenge.

Thanks guys. Flat sawn doesn't show as much open grain, but I don't like the look too much. I think I'll experiment with QS one that I cut sometime in the future. Maybe I'll tape off the back and sides and fill with a litre of CA before slotting and radiusing.

I have built with QS wenge as a fretboard in the past and am doing it again on my current build. I have not had any problems with it. Once the sides have finish on them and the top has frets and is polished, the splinter effect is nullified. If a person really digs into the fingerboard, I could see it wearing down easily, but I have not run across this.

I'm going to try something on a piece of scrap QS wenge in the next couple of days, Steve. If it looks promising, I'll bring it to your get together. Are you going to the Guitar Day at Exotic Woods?

Ha, I love wenge for fingerboards because of its big open pores and how it can take a great smooth polish, not to mention the rich dark colors. It is hard to work but well worth it to me.
